On March 27th the MHRA issued a medical device alert regarding the use of detergent and disinfectant wipes used on reusable medical devices with plastic surfaces.

For more information click on the news title or here. The alert states you need to ensure detergent and disinfectant wipes are compatible with the device and that you should always follow the device manufacturer’s decontamination instructions. You can find the alert here. It describes damage to medical devices such as tympanic thermometers, patient monitors, infusion pumps, dialysis fluid filters, peritoneal dialysis transfer sets and infant warmers.
The action you need to take is to identify all device decontamination processes that include using a detergent and /or disinfectant wipe on a plastic surface and ensure that you have a compatible process in accordance with the device manufacturer’s instructions. If in doubt contact the device manufacturer for clarification.
All Clinell disinfectant wipes have undergone extensive material safety testing to show long term compatibility with a wide variety of plastics and rubbers. Whilst our testing shows our wipes are safe on a wide variety of plastics, the notice stipulates you need to follow the device manufacturer’s decontamination instructions. As such for devices of concern you need to contact the manufacturer of that device to ask them for their decontamination policy.
The alert further states that if the manufacturer’s decontamination instructions are inadequate, report this fact to the MHRA and the manufacturer. If you would like a copy of our material safety testing or any more information please email us on

Due to its unique and superior design features, Clinell’s Easy Clean Commode has been awarded with the prestigious GOOD DESIGN™ award – the world’s most recognised, and oldest Design Awards program organised annually by The Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design in cooperation with the European Centre for Architecture, Art, Design and Urban Studies.

Entries for design and innovation, sustainability, creativity, branding, ecologically responsible design, human factors, materials, technology, graphic arts, packaging, and universal design are submitted annually by the world’s leading manufacturers and Fortune 500 companies. Winners are selected from several thousands of applications across Europe, Asia, Africa, North and South America. Companies are awarded the privilege of using the GOOD DESIGN logo on their winning product and related marketing material, as a mark of excellence to be recognised by an international consumer audience.

Key features of our award-winning commode include the smooth moulded, non-porous design of each part, easy move lockable wheels of EasyMove™ and TotalStop™ patented design, 360O rotating and removable footrests which incorporate a patent pending Clip & Slide mechanism. The latex-free seat cover contains no stitching or foam, the durable stainless steel frame and all other materials used are non-stain and resistant to chemical damage. This minimalist design which incorporates some of the latest in design technology allows the chair to be ultra-hygienic, easy to clean and is consequently used by over 40 NHS trusts already.

As a testament to Clinell Easy Clean Commode’s superior design, we can refer to a case study involving a large teaching hospital in the North of England. This hospital trust switched to the Clinell Easy Clean Commode and has seen a significant improvement in the cleanliness of its commodes. According to its own Trust Audits their new commodes have not had a single fail whereas previously they were averaging around 10 fails a month.
